NOTICE
New code requirements are now in effect for all existing rental properties in the Centre Region. Failure to be in compliance will result in a fine of at least $150.00.
To avoid this fine please make sure of the following:
- Carbon monoxide alarms are installed in the area of the sleeping areas when fossil or solid fuel heating appliances are utilized, or if there is an attached garage.
- Smoke alarms are installed in each sleeping room, in the vicinity of the sleeping rooms and on each additional story including basements. All alarms must be interconnected in such a way that the activation of one alarm within the dwelling unit activates all alarms within the dwelling unit.
- Smoke alarms are installed in the common areas of apartment building or rooming houses that do not have a fire alarm system. All alarms must be interconnected in such a way that the activation of one alarm within the common area activates all alarms within the common area.
- A Fire Safety Certificate is provided to all tenants at the beginning of each lease period and annually thereafter. This certification states that the smoke alarm(s) and fire extinguisher have been installed and functional at the beginning of the lease. It shall also include instructions on how to report deficiencies with the fire safety systems.
- All fire protection systems (fire extinguisher, fire alarm system, sprinkler system and hood suppression system) are operating properly and are inspected at least annually. This is required every year, not just the year of your code inspection.
- Any habitable space on the third floor or higher of any residential building has access to two approved exits.
