NOTICE

New code requirements are now in effect for all existing rental properties in the Centre Region. Failure to be in compliance will result in a fine of at least $150.00.

To avoid this fine please make sure of the following:

  1. Carbon monoxide alarms are installed in the area of sleeping rooms when fossil or solid fuel heating appliances are utilized, or if there is an attached garage.
  2. Smoke alarms are installed in each sleeping room, in the vicinity of the sleeping rooms and on each additional story including basements.
    • Interconnection of smoke alarms within each dwelling unit takes effect in October of 2007.
  3. Smoke alarms are installed in the common areas of apartment building or rooming houses that do not have a fire alarm system.
    • Interconnection of common area smoke alarms takes effect in October of 2007.
  4. A Fire Safety Certificate is provided to all tenants at the beginning of each lease period and annually thereafter. This certification states that the smoke alarm(s) and fire extinguisher have been installed and functional at the beginning of the lease. It shall also include instruction on how to report deficiencies with the fire safety systems.
  5. All fire protection systems (fire extinguisher, fire alarm system, sprinkler system and hood suppression system) are operating properly and are inspected at least annually. This is required every year, not just the year of your code inspection.
